With the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Mr
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, observing that SS functions and
programmes should find its due place in the national network=94,
it becomes evident that the big brother of the Sangh Parivar
continues to wield tremendous power over its olitical wing=94,
the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to The Statesman, the minister observed that the only
way to lear the misconceptions about the RSS was to show its
programmes and functions on Doordarshan. Mr Naqvi felt that all
along there had been isconceptions about the RSS and its
political rivals had been describing the outfit as ommunal=94,
ltra right with force among other things. According to him,
such anti-RSS propaganda could only be countered if it was given
proper coverage in DD.

It may be mentioned that during the allocation of ministries,
the RSS had shown keen interest in retaining the Human Resource
Development and I & B for the Sangh Parivar. here is no harm
in telecasting programmes based on the RSS or covering its
functions. This way its message would be coveyed to the people,
he said. He further asked, ince the DD covers functions of
other religious and social organisations, what was the harm in
giving coverage to the RSS.

Mr Naqvi also felt that the DD should now project the orrect
picture of national culture and the concept of Hundutva.
indutva was being given religious overtones by those who want
to mislead people. It should be used in the cultural context.
The DD plays an important role in clearing such misconceptions
about Hindutva, he added.

Without taking names, the minister claimed that for years the
history books and programmes on DD had been highlighting the
role of a particular ynasty.

D and the books had so far been ignoring the contribution of a
number of leaders which include Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Sardar
Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose in the freedom struggle. Time has
come to highlight their contribution, he said.

Mr Naqvi, who recently took a leading role in forcing the MTV to
change its tri-colour logo said that any foreign channel
attempting to distort or disrespect India's culture would be
sternly dealt with.

The minister, however did not confine himself in wielding his
baton at foreign channels, but also came down heavily upon the
national network for romoting extra-marital affairs.

He claimed that virtually al serials being telecast by the DD
were focussing on extra marital affairs. his has to be
stopped, he said. Instead of such erials polluting our minds
and culture, those relating to mythology should be encouraged.

Denying reports of his difference with the Union I & B Minister,
Mrs Sushma Swaraj, he claimed that all the files of the ministry
were being processed through his department and that he has o
complaints against his senior colleague.
