Title: What about us? (letter)

This is with reference to Iqbal Masud's article 'Ayodhya: Song
of the fallen stones'. The destruction of the Babri Masjid on
December 6, 1992, was truly reprehensible. However, the Islamic
cause would be better served if its champions were equally
strong in the condemnation of the destruction of all places of
worship, be the mosques, synagogues churches or temples.
Not long ago, The Economist (March 6, 1998) reported that
according to the Indonesian Christian Communication Forum, based
in Surabya, 438 churches in Indonesia had been destroyed since
it won independence in 1945. Of these 131 were attacked in 1995-
97. The toll up to February 17 this year was a staggering 38.
To the best of my knowledge, the report has not been repudiated
nor remorse expressed by any Islamic organisation.
