The Union Home Ministry today clarified that the Home Minister, Mr. L.
K. Advani's information given recently in Parliament on Jhabua nuns rape
case was correct and based on the report submitted by the Madhya Pradesh
Government.

Refuting a report appearing in a section of Press today which described
as 'wrong', Mr. Advani claim in Parliament that out of 24 accused in the
Jhabua nuns rape case 12 belong to Christian community, the Home
Ministry said information had been sought from the State Government in
October.

According to a clarification issued by the Home Ministry tonight, the
Home Department of Madhya Pradesh Government had sent the list of 13
accused in the case on October 9.

"Subsequently, on October 15, 1998, the State Government was asked to
furnish the details of the accused. The Superintendent of Police,
Jhabua on October 16 faxed the list with full details of 24 persons
accused in this case, including the 13 accused sent earlier by the Home
Department," the clarification said. In support of its claim, the Home
Ministry also issued the list of 24 accused but did not say how many of
them had been arrested.

Meanwhile, the United Christian Forum for Human Rights has demanded that
the Home Minister direct the authorities to investigate the incident.
Mr. John Dayal, convenor, in a letter to Mr. Advani has asked the
Government to "denounce the violence against Christians and to take
early and genuine action to bring the guilty to book." Mr. Dayal alleged
that there was an effort first to deny the reality of incident, and then
to deny the complicity of communal elements, and finally to see if any
Christians can be implicated in the crime that occurred on September 30
in Jhabua district.
