Bhuvaneswar - Ranjan Pradhan, a Christian, was Tuesday arrested on the
charge of killing a girl and a boy of the same community in Orissa on
Sunday and has confessed to the crime, the state's home secretary
Sanjeev Hota said here. The motive of the murder was found to be rape,
he told PTI adding the assailant, who attempted to rape Sunita Nayak of
his Mandasaru village of Kandhamal district eliminated her when she
recognised him. Ranjan, son of Lawrence Pradhan, happened to be an uncle
of Santosh Pradhan, the other victim of the incident, reports PTI.

Another person who happened to be present there was seriously injured in
the attack. Ranjan was picked up from a market near the village for
interrogation Monday and arrested Tuesday. The police had also
interrogated a dozen others during the past two days before arresting
Ranjan. An eyewitness to the crime, nine-year-old Babula, who had
escaped from the scene and informed the villagers, had since stated that
the assailant resembled the accused, police claimed. Meanwhile, the
bodies of Sunita and Santosh were laid to rest at the village cemetery
last night.
