A prominent Church leader of Tripura, M. Gunnam Halam, has been arrested in Dharmnagar area of North Tripura with a large quantity of dangerous explosives recently. According to the State police the culprit is Secretary of the Baptist Christian Church Union of Tripura. The security forces have recovered 34 kg explosive, 22 kg Aluminium sticks, five kg potasium and seven kg other explosive devices from the Church leader.

The police told mediapersons that the Church leader was regularly supplying arms and explosives to the tribal terrorists of the region. The police had got the information about such anti-national activities of the Church leader from a NLFT terrorist during interrogation. Earlier too a Father was arrested in Guwahati with fake currency notes of rupees five hundred. But following pressure from top the police authorities did not disclose the news. Later, when this news appeared in a local daily the police admitted the fact. Though the Church is being charged with supporting terrorism in North-Eastern States for many years, the police failed to take action due to lack of evidence. Sometimes if they collected any evidence that was not opened by the State police as well as the State's Leftist Government. The police sources claim that the police department had concrete evidence to prove the hands of Church behind terrorist activities in the State, but they cannot act following pressure from the top.
