Panun Kashmir, an organisation
of displaced Kashmiri pandits, today demanded that the community be declared
as ''internally displaced persons'' in conformity with the United Nations
Commission of Human Rights Charter.
In a memorandum submitted
to Union Home Minister L K Advani, convener of Panun Kashmir, Agnishekhar,
said a separate union territory should be carved out of Jammu and Kashmir
for the migrants.
''In order to protect
the community from coercion to return to their native places against their
will till their demand for a union territory is met, the Centre should
declare Kashmiri pandits as internally displaced persons,'' it said.
Meanwhile, several Kashmir
pundit organisations today observed 'Balidan (sacrifice) divas' to mark
the first killing in their community by militants in the Valley.
On this day in 1989,
militants belonging to Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front shot dead senior
vice president of State unit of BJP Tika Lal Taploo in Srinagar.
