The 15-day residential training camp for village temple poojaris organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) at Rameswaram was inaugurated on November 13 by His Holiness Shri Jayendra Saraswati of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.  Shri S.  Vedantam, international vice-president of VHP welcomed Swamiji at the entrance of Goswami Mutt, a multi-service complex of the Parishad where the camp was held.

Gramakovil Poojarigal Peravai, and organisation sponsored by the VHP has been conducting similar camps and all village temple poojaris performing pooja in the grama devatha (village deity) temples in the State have been trained in the 19 camps held earlier.

Addressing the poojaris who had assembled from nearby villages to participate in the camp Swamiji exhorted the poojaris to work as guardians of our culture in the villages.  Swamiji appreciated efforts of the VHP in organisation for convincing the government of Tamil Nadu to give as pension Rs 500 to the 1500 poojaris here.  At the end of the programme Swamiji blessed all the poojaris.

Shri R.B.V.S Manian, kshetra organising secretary of the Parishad explained objectives of the training programme.  He called upon the poojaris to work against the atheist political parties and defeat them in the forthcoming assembly elections of Tamil Nadu.  A Resolution to this effect was passed urging the poojaris to assemble in lakhs at the proposed fourth state level conference of poojaris to be held at Madurai.  Another resolution called upon the people to ask the Government to entrust administration of Hindu temples to an autonomous board.

Earlier, Shri C.  Kanagarajan, state organiser of Gramakovil Poojarigal Peravai gave a welcome address.
