The security forces in
Jammu and Kashmir are exercising utmost restraint in keeping with the cease-fire
announced by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee but official figures show
there has been no let-up in the militants' killing spree.
Police figures showed
that in the first 15 days of the cease-fire, the militants killed 32 civilians
while the number of causalities in the preceding 15 days stood at 34.
Besides, 125 civilians were injured in grenade attacks in the first fortnight
of the cease-fire while the figure for the preceding fortnight stood at
35.
Twelve security personnel
were killed during the first fortnight against 20 in the preceding 15 days.
However, due to the unilateral cease-fire observed by Indian security forces,
the number of militants killed has shown a decrease. Only 13 militants
have been killed in retaliatory action in the first fortnight compared
to 42 in the preceding 15 days.
The number of militant
attacks, however, has gone down during the cease-fire. In the first
15 days of the cease-fire, 66 incidents were reported compared to 120 in
the preceding fortnight.
