The higher education sector in the
State has suffered from an overdose of politicisation even as the universities
are in the grip of financial and academic mismanagement, according to a
study conducted by the Bharatiya Vichara Kendram.
Releasing the findings of the study,
the Kendram director, P. Parameswaran, told mediapersons that the study
revealed that the syllabus of various disciplines, especially those of
science subjects, have not been able to keep pace with the latest developments
in the respective fields.
The syllabus of humanities subjects
have been ``injected with an overdose of Marxist ideology,'' Mr. Parameswaran
said. Portions dealing with such leaders as Nehru, Gandhiji have been deleted
in favour of portions dealing with Communist struggles and Communist leaders
such as E.M.S. Namboodiripad, he said.
The study has found that Kerala's
universities have not been able to incorporate the national-level reforms
initiated by the UGC.
The quality of research taking place
in the varsities is very poor even as there is a decline in the number
of theses for which doctorates are awarded. Two areas where research does
take place are medicine and engineering, the study said
The study for the Kendram was carried
out by the head of department of politics at the S.N. College Cherthala,
K. Jayaprasad, and the head of department of History at the CMS College,
Kottayam, C. I. Isaac, Mr. Parameswaran said.
