The increasingly influential Indian-American
community has scored a recent victory in Washington by blocking a congressional
resolution expressing concern about the violence of Hindu mobs against
Muslims in the Indian state of Gujarat earlier this year. As word of the
pending resolution spread, Indian-American groups inundated Senate offices
with e-mails and phone calls opposing the resolution. "We did not move
on this because we were buried" by messages, says a congressional aide.
Senators had hoped to pass the resolution ahead of Secretary of State Colin
Powell's visit to India in late July. The economically successful Indian-American
community is credited with playing a key role in the warming of U.S.-India
relations in recent years.
