The Janata Dal (Secular) today criticised the Congress for its reported attempt to bribe journalists here.

A day after journalists who were covering a press conference convened by Mysore Rural District Congress Committee were given Rs. 500 each and a wristwatch, the President of the Mysore district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), G.T. Deve Gowda, called upon journalists to boycott the Congress.

The Mysore Rural District Congress Committee convened a press conference here on Monday to announce that 8.25 lakh party workers had been enrolled in the district and the party leadership's decision to give a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh to the unit for enrolling the highest number of workers.

The press conference was addressed by the observer from the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), C.Y. Chinnaswamy, the President of the Mysore rural district unit of the Congress, H. Subbaiah, and the Secretary, Padmanabha. Congress workers reportedly gave the presspersons a bag containing a wristwatch and a sealed cover with Rs. 500, and told them it was a gesture from KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary. Most of the journalists decided to return the gift to Mr. Poojary.
