Naxalites of the People's War are
alleged to have shot dead Nerella Shankar, a Bharatiya Janata Party leader,
in his native village of Nandi Medaram in Andhra Pradesh, today.
According to reports reaching here,
Shankar, the BJP general secretary of Dharmaram mandal, was a disabled
person and ran an STD telephone booth and a ration shop in Dharmaram. He
was returning home on his moped when two persons waylaid him and opened
fire from close range. He died while being shifted to Dharmaram hospital.
Shankar, 38, belonged to the washerman
community and was said to be close to the Union Minister of State for Commerce
and Industry, Ch. Vidyasagar Rao. He is survived by his wife and a son.
The BJP district president, P. Sugunakar
Rao, has condemned the "dastardly act."
In another incident, the CPI-ML
Janashakthi Manair deputy dalam commander, P. Kondal Reddy alias Prakash,
was alleged to have been killed in an encounter with police on the outskirts
of Gudem village in Mustabad mandal of Karimnagar district today.
