Police resorted to lathicharge to
disperse the rampaging Youth Congress workers, who attacked the Guruvayur
police station demanding the release of a youth on Tuesday.
Illyas, 19, was taken into custody
by the Guruvayur SI for interrogation on a complaint filed against
him on Tuesday morning. As the news of the detention of Illyas spread,
a group of Youth Congress workers gathered in front of the police
station and demanded his immediate release.
In the meantime, the Circle Inspector
of the area and the SI were closeted with a police team from Andhra
Pradesh, which arrived in the town in connection with the arrest
of a wanted criminal.
The mob, about 50 in number, became
violent and started protesting against the arrest of the accused.
They tried to enter the police station to release Illyas forcefully.
They also pelted stones at the police station, leaving the windowpanes
broken. Only skeleton staff were present at the station then.
Sensing the mood of the mob, CI
R. Suneesh Kumar and SI V. Haridas rushed to the station along with
additional forces led by Chavakkad Circle Inspector Mohanachandran.
Police later resorted to lathicharge
to disperse the mob. A case was also registered against 40 persons
for attacking police station and the police arrested Jishar, Rafiq,
Jasheem, Ismail, Faisal, Sulieman, Nasser, Shanawas and Shanu in
this connection.
The Guruvayur SI also sustained
injury in the melee. According to police, Illyas was taken into custody
in connection with a number of cases pending at Guruvayur and Pattambi
police stations.
Police are maintaining a strict
vigil and the situation is under control, said P.N. Unnirajan, Dy
SP, Kunnamkulam.
District Youth Congress secretary
C.A. Gopaprathap has condemned the lathicharge on Youth Congress
workers and charged the police with fabricating cases against Youth
Congress workers.
ARRESTED: A team of Andhra Pradesh
police on Tuesday arrested Dinakar Naidu, 55, a criminal wanted in
several cheating cases. The special investigation team of Andhra
Pradesh police traced Dinakar, who was staying in a hotel here.
They also conducted a search at
the hotel room with the assistance of Guruvayur police and seized
Rs 12 lakh in cash and 500 grams of gold. Naidu, based in Tamil Nadu,
is a finance broker.
