Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the rampaging  Youth Congress workers, who attacked the Guruvayur police station  demanding the release of a youth on Tuesday.

Illyas, 19, was taken into custody by the Guruvayur SI for interrogation  on a complaint filed against him on Tuesday morning. As the news of the  detention of Illyas spread, a group of Youth Congress workers gathered  in front of the police station and demanded his immediate release.

In the meantime, the Circle Inspector of the area and the SI were  closeted with a police team from Andhra Pradesh, which arrived in the  town in connection with the arrest of a wanted criminal.

The mob, about 50 in number, became violent and started protesting  against the arrest of the accused. They tried to enter the police  station to release Illyas forcefully. They also pelted stones at the  police station, leaving the windowpanes broken. Only skeleton staff were  present at the station then.

Sensing the mood of the mob, CI R. Suneesh Kumar and SI V. Haridas  rushed to the station along with additional forces led by Chavakkad  Circle Inspector Mohanachandran.

Police later resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. A case was  also registered against 40 persons for attacking police station and the  police arrested Jishar, Rafiq, Jasheem, Ismail, Faisal, Sulieman,  Nasser, Shanawas and Shanu in this connection.

The Guruvayur SI also sustained injury in the melee. According to  police, Illyas was taken into custody in connection with a number of  cases pending at Guruvayur and Pattambi police stations.

Police are maintaining a strict vigil and the situation is under  control, said P.N. Unnirajan, Dy SP, Kunnamkulam.

District Youth Congress secretary C.A. Gopaprathap has condemned the  lathicharge on Youth Congress workers and charged the police with  fabricating cases against Youth Congress workers.

ARRESTED: A team of Andhra Pradesh police on Tuesday arrested Dinakar  Naidu, 55, a criminal wanted in several cheating cases. The special  investigation team of Andhra Pradesh police traced Dinakar, who was  staying in a hotel here.

They also conducted a search at the hotel room with the assistance of  Guruvayur police and seized Rs 12 lakh in cash and 500 grams of gold.  Naidu, based in Tamil Nadu, is a finance broker.
