At least four home ministry and
agency officials are being watched after top secret plans to sack the Narendra
Modi government in July-August leaked to the BJP, soon after which the
former PM, A.B.Vajpayee, warned the UPA against taking any such step while
proceeding on a holiday to Manali. In his train, Sushma Swaraj spoke out
against the plans to dismiss Modi, and this was followed by a warning statement
from the BJP president, L.K.Advani. Once before, plans to sack Modi were
leaked to the BJP, after he refused to cancel a personal visit to the UK,
where he was likely to be arrested, for the death of some British Muslim
tourists during the Gujarat riots. Expecting his arrest in the UK to spark
off riots in Gujarat, the UPA government had planned a massive security
bandobast in the state, and taking the plea of a breakdown in the law-and-order
situation, Modi was planned to be sacked, but this was alerted to the BJP.
Advani spoke to Modi to cancel the UK trip, and when prime minister Manmohan
Singh returned the chief minister's phone call late in the night, he used
that as a cover to stay on in the country. "That leak and this one has
alerted the UPA government about certain officers being sympathetic to
the NDA, and they are now being closely watched," said a senior official.
