The BJP's Tamil Nadu unit on Tuesday alleged a large number of Bangladeshi nationals were residing illegally and asked the state government to take immediate steps to identify such persons and deport them.

As per an estimate, about 20,000 Bangladeshis reside in and around Coimbatore posing a security threat, BJP state president C.P. Radhakrishnan said.

A majority of them also have ration cards, he claimed.

Urging the government to deal with the issue with an iron hand, he said the BJP would soon submit a memorandum to the district collector demanding that steps be taken to identify the illegal residents and take action against them.

When it was pointed out that infiltration of Bangladeshis into India was also causing concern at the national level, he said the issue pertained to national security. But Tamil Nadu was witnessing 'such large infiltration' for the first time.

Alleging that extremist forces had started raising their heads again in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Coimbatore and Madurai, he said the recent murder of Hindu Munnani activist Kalidas at Madurai was a 'clear evidence' to this.
