2 CRPF personnel, 3 militants among 8 killed in Kashmir

Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, including a Sub Inspector, three soldiers and equal number of militants were killed while two others were wounded in different militant related incidents in Kashmir valley since last evening.

Official sources said that CRPF personnel of 67 battalion, on patrol duty at the Gonikhan market near the Hari Singh High Street here, were fired upon by militants from a close range around 2.15 pm this afternoon.

The sources said that while the Sub Inspector Mithai Lal died on the spot, a jawan Roop Kishore was critically wounded.

The jawan was admitted to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, where he died, the sources said.

Banned Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

A caller, who identified himself as the Jaish spokesman told a local news channel that his group killed the two CRPF personnel.

Confirming the killing of CRPF officer and injuries to another in the shooting, DIG S R Ojha said CRPF personnel exercised utmost restraint to avoid civilian casualty.

The militants took advantage of heavy movement of the civilians and targeted the two personnel, he said adding the militants were believed to be hiding in a nearby shopping complex and opened fire when the CRPF men were patrolling.

He said the whole area was cordoned off by the troops and a hunt has been launched to nab the militants.

Three militants were killed as Army troops today foiled an exfiltration attempt by them near the Line of Control in Keran sector of Kupwara.

These militants were trying to exfiltrate to the other side of the LoC when they were confronted by the troops in Keran sector and asked to surrender, the spokesman said.

He said the ultras opened fire and in the ensuing encounter and all the three exfiltrators were killed.

In a pre-dawn attack, a group of militants opened fire on an Army post at village Wadwal in Kandi area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district today, killing three soldiers and wounding another, the sources said.

However, the ultras fled the scene in the face of retaliation by the troops, the sources said.

The deceased soldiers have been identified as Udai Singh, Vinod Kumar and Y K Naik, the sources said adding the injured J Kumar was shifted to hospital.

The scrap shop owner Irshad Ahmad Dar was injured when he was busy separating iron when the blast occurred, the sources said adding he was admitted in SMHS hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. Militants also shot at and injured one Mohammad Shafi Bhat outside his house at Ukai in Kulgam area of Anantnag district, the sources said.

The whole area was cordoned off by the security forces soon after the firing and a hunt was on to nab the militants involved in the attack, the sources said.
