The Ruling Janata Dal (United) member Udai
Narain Chaudhury on Wednesday became the first Dalit speaker of the Bihar
assembly.
Chaudhary was unanimously elected by the 243-member
house. He represents the Maoist-hit Imamganj constituency in Gaya district.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had nominated
him as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the post
earlier this week and his election was a mere formality as the NDA has 143
members in the house Chaudhary's election was announced by protem Speaker
Bhola Singh after a resolution moved by Road Construction Minister Nand Kishore
Yadav and seconded by Revenue and Land Reforms Minister Ramnath Thakur, was
carried unanimously.
Nitish Kumar said that as per convention,
the post of deputy speaker of the house will go to the opposition.
