Mandadi for small family, angers Muslims
Telangana Rashtra Samiti legislator Mandadi
Satyanarayana Red-dy stirred a hornet's nest in the Assembly on Friday by
suggesting that social awareness be brought among Muslims against polygamy
and the need to adopt small family norm.
Participating in the debate on minority welfare
and reservation, Mr Satyanarayana Reddy also objected to building hostels
for students on religious grounds. Mr Reddy said that the government alone
cannot be responsible for creating social awareness and efforts should be
made to create awareness among Muslims against poly-gamy and for the need
to imp-lement the small family norm.
The comments kicked off strong protests from
minister for information and public relations Mohd Ali Shabbir and MIM legislator
Akbaruddin Owaisi. Intervening, Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy said he would examine
the records and if necessary expunge the remarks.
Mr Shabbir immediately objected to his comments
saying, "the MLA is talking against the Shariat." He also demanded
that Mr Reddy withdraw his comments. The TRS legislator said he hadn't made
any objectionable comments and had only underlined the need for creating awareness
among the community.
