Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Mahanta
has made public a letter revealing uneasy links between the Congress and Dimasa
militant group, the DHD.
The letter has been addressed to the DHD Commander-in-Chief
and signed on behalf of the Congress by the Chief Executive Council Member
and Chairperson of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council.
It agrees to the DHD's suggestions for development
work in areas under its influence in Dhansiri and promises to create jobs
for Dimasa youth.
The letter ends with both signatories saying
they will abide by the conditions laid down by the DHD.
Agreement reached
Mahanta, who distributed copies of the letter,
said that the agreement was reached just before the parliamentary polls last
year.
"It's just another indication the way
the coming assembly polls will be contested in the state and this is our feeling
and major reason why the state government is not interested in bringing normalcy
back to the state," alleged Mahanta.
The expose comes just two weeks after armed
DHD cadres fled from a camp in Dhansiri following police action on December
2 and there is still no news of where they are.
Effects visible
Talking to NDTV, the Commander-in-Chief of
the DHD confirmed the outfit had received Rs 1 crore before the polls and
its effects were visible in the Congress performance in areas under DHD influence.
"Now they have approached us and they
have agreed and signed it. The fact is they are not implementing it. But if
they are not implementing, I think they will have a tough time," said
Prannab Nunisa, DHD, Commander-in-Chief.
There have been previous allegations against
Congressmen of nexus with militant groups in the Northeast.
Last month, the Indian Army Chief showed documentary
evidence of the Manipur Chief Minister having paid militants a sum of Rs 1.5
crores.
Earlier, Manipur Governor General V K Nayar
had charged two senior Congress leaders of having links with two different
factions of the NSCN.
