Indefinite curfew was on Tuesday imposed after
a clash between people of two communities over the Mahavir Jayanti procession
being taken out in the walled city of Pali in Rajasthan in which at least
10 people were injured.
Tension erupted as some people belonging to
the minority community objected to processionists passing through 'Rooi-Wallon-Ka-Pinjara
Mohalla', Superintendent of Police Hawa Singh Ghoomariya said.
Nine youth of a community were arrested and
five swords were seized from them, the SP said.
Two FIRs, one each by the police and an injured
were registered with the Kotwali police, he said.
There was no report of any casualty so far,
he said.
Jawans of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary, Special
Task Force and another RAC company was called from Udaipur to maintain law
and order which was tense but under control, Ghoomariya said.
Police escorting the procession tried to defuse
tension and enable Mahaveer Jain's followers to take out the rally but the
minority community people threw stones from behind and came openly with sharp
edged weapons like sword, the SP said, adding a timely action and curfew promulgation
contained the violence.
Tension prevails in the industrial city of
Pali but the situation is under control, Inspector General of Police (Law
and Order) Navdeep Singh said.
One round of peace committee was held but
to no avail, he said adding the second round of talks would assume later tonight.
Any relaxation in curfew would be decided
on Wednesday on merit, the SP said.
