Introduction: Intelligence sources say a call was made from Matunga station to don's aide in Dubai immediately after blast, saying 'Thank You'

Immediately after a blast ripped through a local train in Matunga on Tuesday, a call was placed from Matunga to an associate of Dawood in Dubai, saying 'Thank You', Intelligence Bureau (IB) sources said.

They added that it was possible that Dawood provided financial assistance for the blasts, even if did not directly engineer it.

Thirteen years after Dawood masterminded the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, his role in the present blasts is being probed. This time, however, it is believed the help did not come through expertise but through hawala transactions.

The call from Matunga is the third call after the blasts, which the police are probing. The other two were made to Karachi and Afghanistan from Borivli and Jogeshwari respectively.

IB sources said the outfit that planned the recent blasts had used D company and its allied agencies for logistical purposes and hawala transactions between Pakistan and Mumbai.

Nepal training

Adding weight to the Dawood angle is the fact that the two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, Fayaz Kazi (32) and Mohammad Jabiuddin alias Jabi (30), suspected to be the masterminds of the July 11 blasts, are believed to have been trained at an LeT camp in Kathmandu, Nepal in February (See A06). Dawood has a strong hawala base in Nepal.

Kazi and Jabi are also the main suspects in the Aurangabad RDX seizure in May this year and the Karnavati Express blast in Ahmedabad in March.

Local support

Intelligence sources say Dawood's aides could have helped those who carried out the blasts with a place to stay and also local travel.

Director General of Police Dr P S Pasricha said yesterday, "Without the involvement of local modules the explosions could not have been possible but it is too early to comment on who is involved."
