Malappuram: Four persons were injured in fresh
attacks in Tanur near here today even as a "tense" situation prevailed
in Tirur and adjoining areas of the district following the killing of an RSS
activist on Saturday. A BJP sympathizer was attacked around 6 am by unidentified
people who came in a car, police said.
Soon after the incident, three persons belonging
to a minority community were attacked in the area, they said, adding the injured
were rushed to Kozhikode Medical College hospital. RSS activist Ravi was allegedly
killed by some activists of Muslim outfit, National Development Front, on
Saturday night in Tirur. Following the killing, the RSS observed a dawn-to-dusk
strike in the district on Sunday. In all, eight persons had been injured in
the attacks so far in various places of the district.
The fresh incidents had come at a time when
the district administration had initiated stringent measures, including banning
of two wheelers in Tirur and pillion-riding in the entire district after it
was found that motorbikes had been used to carry out the attacks.
Though an all-party meeting was held in Tirur
last night to restore peace, today's attacks have worsened the situation,
police said, adding elaborate security arrangements had been made across the
district.
RSS activist hacked to death
Tirur (Kerala): An RSS activist was hacked
to death and another seriously injured in an attack carried out by a six-member
gang here late last night,. The RSS had called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in
Malappuram district in protest against the incident and it was `partial' and
`peaceful' so far, police said.
Ravi and Babu, the RSS volunteers, were waylaid
by the gang near a school here and attacked with lethal weapons. Local people,
who noticed the duo bleeding with serious injuries, rushed them to a nearby
hospital. While Ravi was declared brought dead, Babu was moved to the Kozhikode
Medical College hospital, police said.
The miscreants, who reportedly came in three
motorbikes, managed to escape under cover of darkness, they said. Meanwhile,
a tense situation was prevailing in the entire district following the hartal,
police said. The RSS has accused Muslim outfit, National Development Front
for the killing of its volunteer.
Even as the RSS took out a protest march this
morning, some of its workers allegedly attacked a passer-by belonging to the
minority community. The victim, identified as Mohammed Rafeeq, has been rushed
to the Kozhikode Medical College hospital.
