Alleging that Hindu priests in Tamil Nadu
were not secure under DMK regime, AIADMK whip K A Sengottaiyan today demanded
action against those who had assaulted a priest at Neyveli in Cuddalore district
and cut his sacred thread.
Participating in the discussion on the demand
for grants to Home, Prohibition and Excise departments in the assembly, Sengottaiyan
said after the statue of social reformist E V R Periyar was desecrated last
week, a group of persons had entered a temple in Neyveli and broke a Ganesh
idol.
They had also assaulted the temple priest
Gurumurthy and cut his sacred thread, he said. Temple priests are not secure
under the DMK regime and instances of cutting sacred threads have increased,
he added.
Sengottaiyan said his party did not object
to action against those who had desecrated the statue of social reformist
E V R Periyar.
"In fact, those who were responsible
for the act should be booked under Goondas Act", he said adding action
should be taken against those who were assaulting temple priests also.
Fund allocation for police modernisation was
sufficient now, he said and charged the DMK government with not giving importance
to setting up more all-women police stations. The DMK government was also
not taking measures to check illicit liquor and sale of fake lottery tickets,
he added.
He alleged that sufficient police protection
has not been given to AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa. Instances of arms smuggling
were also occuring under the DMK regime, he said. (Our Correspondent)
