Marxist cadres went berserk and allegedly looted tarpaulin worth Rs 6 lakh from a warehouse in the Khandaghosh police station area.

The warehouse owner, a former party cadre, was wounded by his former partymen. Police have begun a probe. Arrests are yet to be made. The victim, Mr Mir Piyar Ali, sought the intervention of the SP, Burdwan today, alleging that local police stations were trying to cover up the matter under the diktat of the party's local leadership.

About 200 Marxist cadres, allegedly led by Mr Sirazul Sk, the local committee secretary of the CPI-M in Keshabpur, raided the warehouse in Chakpurahit crossing on the Burdwan-Arambagh Road yesterday.

Mr Ali alleged: "I was at the counter when I suddenly found myself surrounded by the cadres. They dragged me out and beat me up in broad daylight.

He alleged: "Sirazul Sk was giving instruction to the cadres. While leaving the warehouse, they took away tarpaulin worth Rs 6 lakh without any resistance and threatened me with dire consequences."

Mr Mir said: "The local police station initially refused to accept any complaint against the local party secretary and asked me to settle the matter amicably.

The OC was reluctant to register a complaint of the tarpaulin theft. When I said I would approach senior officials, the police station recorded a general diary." Mr Mir was accused of assaulting Mr Sirazul Sk on 22 August, 2005.

Mr Mehfuz Sk, CPI-M zonal secretary in Khandaghosh, said: "I have heard the matter but am yet to know the details. The party shall inquire into the matter."

The SP, Burdwan, Mr Piyush Pandey, said: "We have received the complaint and the local police station has been asked to make a proper inquiry."
