Islamic fundamentalism is raising its hood
in Assam. VCDs and torchlight is being circulated. The VCDs contain Islamic
verses of the Al-Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden. His image appears when torchlight
is focused, threatening the security of the area.
ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM has been on the rise
in Assam, especially in those areas of the state where people belonging to
the minority community live in large numbers.
Video CDs and torchlights have been widely circulated in six districts including
areas by the river Brahmaputra. According to local sources, the VCDs contain
Islamic verses of the Al-Qaida chief Osama Bin Laden, whose image appears
when torchlight is focused. Now that every one is familiar with Osama, it
will be relatively easy to convince the people of the same religion in the
name of Jihad.
With this mission, Islamic fundamentalists are now circulating VCDs and torchlights
in the interior areas of these districts. These easy-going people of suspect
citizenship are fond of such gifts as torchlights and VCDs. Till now the state
government has not taken any step to curb such activities in the specified
areas of the districts.
The president of the Hindu Yuva Chatra Parishad, Brajen Kakoti, has condemned
this type of anti-Indian activities and demanded that immediate action be
initiated. Osama Bin Laden, in his latest video-tape released to the Al-Zazira
television channel, has urged the Muslim community in Assam and Kashmir to
fight in the name of Jihad.
It is very important from the point of view of security since the terrorist
groups of Bangladesh like Harkat-Ul-Jihad-Al-Islami-Bangladesh (HUJI-B), Harkat-Ul-Mujahiddin
(HUM), Jammat-Ul-Mujahiddin (JMB) etc, known collaborators of Al-Qaida, are
now very active in the Northeastern region courtesy, some local insurgent
groups.
