Three heavily-armed militants were killed
as army troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) foiled a major infiltration
bid in Tangdhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, a defence spokesman
said.
The alert troops noticed a group of militants
trying to sneak into Indian territory from across the border in Tangdhar sector
of north Kashmir's Kupwara district and challenged them, he said.
The infiltrators opened fire and in the ensuing
gunbattle three militants were killed, the spokesman said.
The identity and group affiliation of the
deceased militants could not be ascertained immediately as the operation to
track down other militants of the same group was continuing when last reports
were received, he said.
Troops have launched a massive search operation
in the nearby woods to track down other members of the infiltrating group,
who might have escaped during the exchange of fire, army sources said.
On August 22, troops scuttled a major infiltration
bid in Machil sector of Kupwara and shot dead 12 militants in a single operation.
Four army personnel including a colonel were
also killed in the gunbattle.
Besides foiling these major infiltration bids,
the troops killed two more militants in separate encounters near the LoC in
Machil sector last week.
