Chief Minister Mayawati announced on Thursday
that the state government has decided to withdraw the Uttar Pradesh Control
of Organised Crime Ordinance (UPCOCO) because of the Centre's discriminatory
attitude. Addressing a press conference here, Mayawati said though the ordinance
was pending with President Pratibha Patil, the state government has decided
to withdraw it and "throw it into the dustbin". At the same time,
she said that if the Congress had any sense of fair play, the Centre should
tell the Maharashtra government to do away with MCOCA and deal with crime
under the existing laws.
