In a major breakthrough, the Srinagar police
has arrested Masrat Alam, the most wanted separatist leader and mastermind
of the ongoing Quit Kashmir agitation. Additional DGP K. Rajendera said Alam,
the man behind the 'protest' calendars, was arrested in the Telbal area on
the outskirts of the city on Monday.
"He was responsible for a lot of violence
and our major concern was to bring down the violence,'' Rajendra said.
Coming after the arrest of separatist Asiya
Andrabi, leader of the Dukhtaran-e-Millat on August 28, Alam's arrest will
be seen as a setback for hardline separatists.
A former militant commander, Alam, who is
about 40 years old, came into the limelight during the 2008 Amarnath land
row and was in custody for 21 months.
