With the arrest of five men, the crime branch claims to have busted a gang of notorious cattle thieves from Mewat. Police said the gang was involved in 110 cases in Delhi and the rest of NCR.
The gang members used to transport the cattle in stolen tempos and mini trucks. They would supply the cattle to an illegal slaughterhouse on the outskirts of Delhi.
"A team led by ACP Sanjay Sehrawat arrested the five cattle thieves," said Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of police (crime). The accused—Kamru (27), Parvez (23), Lukman (32), Shahazad (21) and Abid (25)—targeted villages on the fringes of the city.
The police team had laid a trap near a petrol pump in northeast Delhi's Bhajanpura. The accused were arrested while they were trying to flee in their stolen tempo on Sunday.
Cops said that once the thieves had opened fire at a police team when it confronted them. They were involved in several heinous crimes.
During interrogation, the gang leader, Lukman, told the cops that they used to recce the place before targeting it. He said that his gang stole the tempos that were parked outside dhabas.
Police said that the stolen cattle were sedated so that they could be loaded onto the vehicle without any hassle. Four countrymade pistols, along with 10 live cartridges, were seized from them. Two stolen vehicles (Tata 407) were recovered as well.
Police said that the accused had over 23 cases registered against them. They had been operating together for the past two years. |
