Rubbishing opposition parties’ claim that tweaking in the GST rates in the 28% slab is done with an eye on Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that it was a consensus decision of the GST Council in July that it will review the rates of items after three months and it has nothing to do with the elections.

“Barring some items, most of the items are now out of 28% slab. This will be a major relief to the consumer and the middle class. It was not a political decision,” Sarma said.

Sarma, who led a group of ministers to ease compliance burden for assesses and make the composition scheme more attractive, said: “The main concern of the hotel industry has been addressed and now AC and non-AC restaurants will just have to pay 5% tax. However, there is a higher slab for star category hotels, which no one should mind paying.”

Sarma announced that the GST Council has decided to set up a committee to look into the tax rates for handloom and handicrafts. “The committee will study what concession can be given and accordingly a report will be submitted in the next council meeting. This tweaking will hugely benefit the construction industry.”
