Madan Lal Pahwa, a Punjabi who had served in the Royal Indian Navy, unfortunately became a refugee due to the partition and had to migrate from Pak to India.
While migrating back, he lost 20 members of his clan who chose to travel by train and met a tragic end at Dhundia-mass cred by Mslms, including his own aunt. Miraculously his father was rescued from a heap of the dead.
At the age of 21, just ten days prior to Gandhi's assassination, Madan Lal Pahwa carried out a b0mb detonation at Gandhi's prayer meeting in Delhi on January 20, with the intention of assassinating Gandhi.
He witnessed first hand the horrifying bestiality and savagery on Hindus and Sikhs by the Mslms during Partition. Both men and women were subjected to the most savage acts of violence.
Upon reaching Fazilka, he recounted how a Mslm mob attacked them, resulting in the loss of 400 Hindu & Skh lives, with only 40 or 50 managing to survive. Additionally, over a hundred girls were tragically abducted by the Mslm mob.
Despite witnessing the horrifying sight of 500 women being stripped n* ked and forced to march by Mslms, with their breasts, noses, and ear cheeks cut, and the tragic incident of a child being roasted, he discovered that M.K. Gandhi was attempting to exert pressure on the Indian Government to repatriate Hindu and Sikh refugees, allowing Mslms who had left India to come back and live in peace.
In addition to this, Gandhi personally visited the Mslim camp and encouraged them to stay in their current location, while simultaneously persuading Nehru and Patel to disarm the Hindu and Sikh communities, in order to ensure that Mslms could live without fear. Furthermore, he requested to repatriate Hindu and Sikh refugees.
The consequences of partition were that the movable property left behind by the Raj had to be divided.
Everything from ships, acroplanes, ammunition, railway engines and wagons, down to office furniture and even office files was to be shared out. The cash possessed by undivided India, which was held in the RBI amounted to Rs 220 crores and it was agreed that a quarter of this amount or Rs 55 crores, should be paid to Pak.
In order to pressure the Govt of India into carrying out these actions, Gandhi resorted to fasting.
Madanlal, as a refugee, exerted great effort in seeking employment to sustain himself. He transitioned from being a book seller to working at a firecracker shop and eventually became a fruit seller. The circumstances of the other refugees were quite similar.
It was not only Godse or Pahwa who desired to assassinate; a majority of the refugees who endured appalling brutality and savagery during Partition experienced anger and anguish, believing that they had been betrayed. They viewed providing financial aid to Pak as an act of national betrayal.
A portion of these refugees marched towards Birla House to express their dissent against Gandhi, vehemently shouting, "If he (Gandhi) wants to die, let him die. We want blood inreturn of ßlood."
The plan to assassinate Gandhi during his public prayer failed and Pahwa, who had set off a bomb near the podium over which Gandhi sat addressing the crowd, was arrested
As Sulochana told police about it. And After prayer, Gandhi praised Mandanlal as "Bahadur" (Brave warrior) and compared him to Bhagat Singh.
He said “Bache hai, abhi yeh samajte nahi, Maroonga tab yad karege, ke boodha theek kehta tha”
When the guards at Birla House apprehended Madanlal and March, he confronted the "Phir Aayege".
Madanlal endured harassment and was subjected to disgustingly sadistic tortures by the police.
He suffered relentless beatings on the soles of his feet with a tightly wound rope while being bombarded with questions. Additionally, he was forced to lie on the floor with a charpoy's two legs (string bed) resting on his hands, while a policeman repeatedly jumped on it. His genitals were manipulated, abused, prodded, and struck with sticks. Most dreadfully, he was subjected to what he believes was a local specialty known as 'the ordeal by ants.' The officers would hold large red ants in their fingers, provoke them by spitting on them, and then release them onto his exposed body.
Mandanlal kept silence & didnot utter the name of conspirator till the end.
Nathuram V. Godse and Narayan D. Apte were to be hanged by strangulation
Madanlal Pahwa, Vishnu R. Karkare, Gopal V. Godse and Dattatraya S. Parchure and Shankar Kistayya were sentenced each to undergo transportation for life.
Digambar R. Badge, as an approver, has fulfilled the conditions of granting him King's pardon therefore he was released. The accused were permitted to appeal against the order within 15 days.
Madanlal K Pahwa was released from jail in October 1964. |
